The Meaning of Divided by Zero

P1010571

My name is Robin and for much of my life, I have been a math teacher.  If you remember your math facts, dividing by zero is undefined.

All of us have moments of our lives where the universe as we know it shifts, where all our expectations of what we thought life was going to be were changed.  Maybe that moment came when you learned you had cancer, got divorced, admitted you had a substance abuse problem, found out you were pregnant with twins or when a loved one died.  Whatever your crisis, at that moment, your life was divided by zero and life as you knew it became undefined.

The question we all have at that moment is “what next”?  How do we redefine our lives? How do we reset our compass? How do we even define where we are headed when our whole world has collapsed around us?  Or do we just “continue staying in the dysfunction we are in rather than do the work needed to have the lives we want”?

This blog is about my story to redefine my life, to rise from the ashes of trauma and the ending of my expectations for my life.  It is my journey through the heartbreak of betrayal, loneliness of success, overcoming of obstacles, and working to carve out a new life and an identity separate from that of “wife”, “mother” and “teacher”.

  2. I came across your blog today … and poked around and came to this page…then your My Story page.

I am not sure what I want to say … but … ok … in a list:

    1) The Divide By Zero meaning … at first I thought, “What???? Foul. Incorrect. No, no, no.” Then I read your explanation. And thought … “Yes.” I think I will always remember this definition now.

    2) Your Story – It is a … a difficult journey you have been on. And I think you will be ok.

    3) Sabbatical – Wow. I am impressed. If you don’t mind I think I will follow what you write.
